Title: Local order and disorder investigated by transmission electron microscopy
Abstract: A significant difference in material property can be induced by a small change of atomic position and chemistry. Structure-property relationship, therefore, is important in new material development. It is well known that the versatility of modern electron microscopes is capable to provide comprehensive information of the specimen, especially in investigating local structural/chemical order and disorder. Because of the strong electron-matter interaction, it is relatively easy to detect the presence of aperiodic or disordered atomic arrangements. Two diffraction techniques, rotation electron diffraction (RED) and electron pair-distribution function (ePDF) will be discussed, and their uniqueness will be demonstrated by several studies, e.g. perovskite oxides, nanoparticles and amorphous materials.
